Dear LIZ Community,

Would you believe it? We're already halfway through Q2, and the temperature is finally forecast to hit the 20s this weekend. Embracing that mid-spring momentum, we are thrilled to announce the official launch of our newest Sprint Studio pre-accelerator cohort, welcoming a fresh group of innovators to the LIZ ecosystem.

We’re also revving up for a spectacular lineup of community events in the coming weeks. For this year’s Toronto Tech Week (TTW), we’re joining forces with Clio to welcome their CTO, Jonathan Watson, for an exclusive fireside chat. Next month, we’re delighted to partner once again with the Legal Innovation Forum for their flagship national event right here in TO.  And to top it all off, we'll be celebrating our own 10th anniversary, generously hosted by our friends and partners at Fasken Emerging Tech Practice.

So, pull out your warm-weather attire, mark your calendars, and join us at some — or all — of these excellent events.

For this and more, read on.

All the best,

Dr. Sasha Saunders
Director

DemandPay

1. Company elevator pitch

DemandPay helps workers understand their legal rights and negotiate termination packages, without the need for a lawyer.

2. What's the best advice you've ever received?

"If it's stupid but it works, it ain't stupid!" To me, this is a funny way of saying: don't let others' judgement prevent you from acting on your vision, plan, or deviating from the well-beaten path. If you know what you want, and believe you can get it, then go for it.

3. If you could have dinner with any innovator or entrepreneur (past or present), who would it be and why?

Muhammed Ali. He turned a sport into one of the greatest shows on earth and a platform for social change. He lifted others through entrepreneurship. He was so committed to his principles that he didn't waver even in the face of losing material possessions, titles, and his freedom. I would like to apply that attitude in my own life.

4. What’s a book, podcast, or resource that has influenced you the most?

I think I've listened to every one of Y Combinator's podcasts and Youtube episodes. The quality of information they put out, for free, is hard to beat. I've learned so much from the information, and it not only has influenced the way I manage my startup, but I also use it as a source of inspiration.

5. How do you unwind at the end of the day?

At the end of the day I crack a diet coke, put on some music, and cook dinner with my partner. Hearing about their day helps me unwind. I also like to go out with friends at the end of a long week, and enjoy boxing to destress.
